'A masterpiece' - New Scientist

'An extraordinarily vivid, interesting and beautiful book.' – Max Nieuwsweekend

‘In his conclusion, Van der Does warns against taking up new drastic treatment methods too

quickly, devised by powerful, dominant protagonists, without reasonable evidence of their effect and safety. More so, he argues that the magic of healing in psychiatry and clinical psychology lies not so much in treatment to improve symptoms but mainly in helping the patient lead a meaningful and purposeful life. The author could not have composed a more beautiful final chord for his fascinating and sometimes shocking book.’ – Humanistisch Verbond

‘The Magic of Healing by the Leiden professor of clinical psychology Willem van der Does is full of horror stories. In the past, the most far-reaching ideas could fall into fertile ground if they suited the zeitgeist. Almost always they involved scholars with huge egos and unbridled ambition. The line between science and pseudoscience was occasionally wafer thin. Medical progress never takes place without errors, nuances Van der Does, but it would be better if psychiatry is not too radical.’ – Humo
