美国中情局在冷战时期与文学杂志挂勾，进行文化宣传的新闻一出，这件事便一直闹得沸沸扬扬，一直都没有解决。这件事一直上演着，好几位美国最受欢迎的文学家，包括Peter Matthiessen、George Plimpton与Richard Wright在内，他们的作品都因为这件事蒙污了。
 
《告密者》说的是两名中情局探员如何模糊政治宣传与文学界线的真实故事。一名探员创立了推广美国籍欧洲作家与文化自由的文学杂志，另一名探员则用暗杀和审查制度当做政治工具推翻政府。拥护这名“文化”探员的人争辩，应该要赞颂他提高了艺术与思想自由，但这两名探员背后的目的是一样的，而且他们用的手法也一样：欺骗、诡计和恐吓。
 
《告密者》让我们知道，中情局探员的好坏，不只正反两面如此简单。它也说到，文化冷战行动者们一再的用反共产主义这个理由，对所有左派与有政治倾向的作家恣意窥探，这样的作法将美国的民主推往集权监视人民的苏联模式。
