1930年代，当红女演员Estella Lamare离奇地陈尸在伦敦最先进的电影剪辑室中。从尸体与自动录像机录下的证据看来，可以确定Lamare是因刺伤身亡，而她的戏剧搭档Ian Jensen也曾在事发现场，但是警方却没办法判定这起案件到底是意外、自杀，还是谋杀。Lamare在生前最后一出电影作品中和Jensen有许多对手戏，两人共同诠释一段难分难解的三角关系。如今身为嫌疑人的Jensen，却消失得无影无踪。
警方原本以为Jensen会逃往故乡挪威，却意外在伦敦的旅馆发现他的尸体，经判定确认为头部中枪而亡。与电影圈脱不了关系的剪辑师Cameron McCabe，于是无可避免地成为警方追查的对象。其实早在这几桩案件发生以前，他曾经接获上级要求，将这部电影中所有Lamare出现的画面都剪除删去，这其中是否暗藏何种阴谋诡计？如今McCabe身边的人相继身亡，诸多的疑点、各异的证词，让他深陷污名与危机。McCabe开始亲自去调查，也因此展开了与神秘警探Smith之间的争锋相对。
 
《剪辑室谋杀案》的前面章节都是以作者McCabe的第一人称口吻叙述，然而中间情节一转，连McCabe也突然身亡。我们只知道他将手稿寄给了A.B.C. Müller，做为对McCabe的悼念，Müller替他写完剩余的故事。然而数十载过去，本书依然谜团重重、悬疑吊诡，留给世人满腹的疑问。
 
Cameron McCabe的真实身分究竟是谁？他是无辜的受害者、还是谋杀所有人的凶手？他是本书的作者、还是和所有人开了一个大玩笑的骗子？如果这本书不是他的作品，那《剪辑室谋杀案》的作者到底是谁？
