The dilapidated and abandoned silhouette of the Intercontinental Hotel rises above the Kabul valley as a symbol of a people wounded by decades of invasions and conflicts. But neither the bombings nor the savage dictatorship of the Taliban prevent their employees from coming to work on time, determined to keep the city’s most iconic

establishment open in the hope that the good old days will return to Afghanistan. The arrival of Frank Goldkamp, a businessman looking for deals in the world’s darkest places, will alter the life at the hotel and raise suspicion among the Taliban. When news of the 9/11 attacks on the United States break, and a new war looms on the horizon, the American guest will be forced to take a risky and precarious journey across Afghanistan. His new friend, a bellhop at the Intercontinental, will be his guide. And loyalty, their only chance of survival. Drawing inspiration from his experience as a war correspondent in Afghanistan, David Jimenez recreates real characters and events to write a heartbreaking novel in which friendship, love, beliefs and hope are tasted by the extremes of human condition, its light and darkness.
