关于作者:
The son of an Italian immigrant, Jean Giono was born on March 30, 1895, in Manosque, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region. After the war, during which he fought at Chemin des Dames, he returned to his job at a bank, until the success of his first novel, Colline (Hill ), a story of the earth's revenge against the men who exploit it indiscriminately. In 1931, he addressed the war for the first time in Le Grand Troupeau (The Great Herd ), where he contrasted the horror of the front with the peace of the Provençal countryside. After The Song of the World in 1934—one of his finest books, in which love and violence intertwine around a powerful and fierce man, disgusted with life since the death of the only person he loved—Giono felt the need to renew his fictional universe and wrote Two Riders of the Storm , a novel of freedom and excess where the image of blood is omnipresent. A committed pacifist on the eve of the war, Giono was blacklisted by the National Writers' Committee in 1944. In his diary from that time, he reveals his resistance to any commitment and his indifference to slander. He drew new strength from this ordeal and composed the "Hussar" cycle, the story of Angelo Pardi, a young Piedmontese man forced to emigrate to France. The cycle begins with Angelo , continues with The Horseman on the Roof , where cholera, a symbol of war, strikes and spreads throughout southern France, and concludes with Mad Happiness during the Italian Revolution of 1848. Masterpieces follow one after another: A King Without Entertainment , The Strong Souls , The Polish Mill . In his later years, ill, he wrote The Deserter , drawing inspiration from a mysterious figure whom he transformed into a true novelistic hero: a Frenchman who, a century earlier, had taken refuge in the Valais mountains. His last novel, The Iris of Susa , recounts the life of Tringlot, a thief, plunderer, and accomplice of murderers, who takes refuge in the mountains to escape them. There, against all odds, he falls in love with a baroness, and his life is forever changed. Author of twenty-four completed novels, numerous collections of short stories, poems, essays, articles, and screenplays, Giono, remaining outside the mainstream of all 20th-century literary movements, combined an extraordinary facility for invention with the demands of a writing style constantly seeking renewal. This remarkable storyteller died in 1970.
Eva Jospin is a French artist known for her elaborate cardboard sculptures. As evidenced in her work Details D’Une Forêt (2011), which details a section of forest in bas-relief, Jospin lends a sense of complicated depth to her sculptures despite them being constructed entirely out of flat planes. Her work addresses the intrinsic relationship and highlights the strangeness of cardboard acting as a stand-in for an earlier form of itself—wood. Born in 1975 in Paris, France, Jospin is the daughter of the former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. Though she began by studying architecture, Jospin soon switched her attention to sculpture and found she preferred the physicality of making objects by hand. She has been the subject of many exhibitions throughout Europe, notably including the Palais de Tokyo in 2012. She lives and works in Paris, France.
